There’s smoke coming out of my Ooni Volt.Updated 7 months ago

When cooking at high temperatures, it's normal for a slight amount of smoke to

be produced in Ooni Volt 12. If you notice an excessive amount of smoke, it's

likely due to food debris such as flour, cheese, or sauce burning on the

stone.

**How to prevent smoke**

To help reduce excessive smoke in Ooni Volt 12, consider the following advice.

* **Avoid excessive amounts of flour** : Use less flour on your peel and when stretching out your dough and attempt to knock off any excess flour once stretched

* **Avoid excessive amounts of oil: **If adding oil to your pizza when applying toppings, only use a small drizzle. If baking a pan-style pizza, make sure you bake it at the appropriate temperature. We **_do not_** recommend dishes that require high amounts of oil (ie. roasting) to be cooked in Ooni Volt 12.

* **Minimise ingredients high in fat: **Be mindful of ingredients you use while cooking to help reduce grease buildup and subsequent smoke production. Ingredients dressed in oils, butter, and fatty cuts of meat can release excess grease when heated, leading to smoke. Consider using leaner cuts of meat and trimming excess fat before cooking.

* **Proper ventilation** : Ensure that the area you position Ooni Volt 12 has sufficient ventilation. Open windows and/or turn on the extractor fan to allow the smoke to dissipate quickly. Adequate ventilation helps prevent smoke buildup.

* **Clean and maintain** : Regularly clean Ooni Volt 12 to prevent excess smoke. Grease and food residue can accumulate over time, leading to more smoke during cooking. For cleaning advice, check out this [article](https://support.ooni.com/en_us/how-do-i-clean-my-ooni-volt-r1CuhS8Ai)

* **Control temperature** : Depending on what you are baking in Ooni Volt 12, ensure you are cooking at the appropriate temperatures to minimize smoke. For low and slow bakes, avoid setting the temperature too high to prevent them from burning too quickly

**How to stop a fire:**

In the rare event of a fire inside the Ooni Volt 12, follow these steps to

extinguish it safely:

1. Close the door.

2. Put the oven on standby by pressing the door's power button. **Note** : Do not switch the side power switch off or unplug your Ooni Volt.

3. The fire will be starved of oxygen and it will extinguish.

4. Once completely cool, proceed to clean to remove any residue ahead of your next cook.
